'Três Bagos' and 'Três Bagos Sauvignon Blanc': well-known, this white duo is now available in the 2016 “version”. Two wines that complement each other in their “formula” – blended wine versus single-variety; typical Douro grape varieties versus foreign grape varieties – and in the “way” in which they can face the challenges of summer, being suitable for solo moments, to cool off from the typical heat of this season, or for a table full of delicacies.
Two references known for their elegance, balance on the palate and potential for aging in the bottle. Three characteristics that define the 'Três Bagos' range, whose aging in wood is not too long in order to keep alive the fruit that determines the character of the varieties.
Successor of the ' Three Berries white' 2015' – a wine to which Mark Squires, wine critic for the renowned publication eRobert Parker / The Wine Advocate, attributed 90 points , in September last year –, the 2016 harvest is once again the result of a blend of Viosinho, Gouveio and Rabigato – the most typical white varieties of the Douro –, with grapes from vines that are 25 and 30 years old, from the different farms of the producers that make up Lavradores de Feitoria. After the grapes are harvested and selected, 80% are vinified and aged in stainless steel, while 20% undergo the vinification process in new French oak barrels, where they are also aged for around 6 months. On the nose, the fruit is intense, with pineapple, pear and citrus fruits standing out, which gives it the minerality and freshness that guarantee good evolution in the bottle. On the palate, the freshness and richness of the fruit is confirmed, combined with some spices. With balanced acidity, this is an 'all-terrain' white in terms of pairing.
'Três Bagos Sauvignon Blanc' : the name leaves no doubt; this is a single-variety wine. A white wine whose grapes come from just one vineyard, Valinhas, belonging to Casa de Mateus, in Vila Real. This is the only 'Três Bagos' whose grapes do not come from the different Lavradores de Feitoria estates, located throughout the three sub-regions of the Douro: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. The 2016 harvest reveals an exuberant white, fruity and fresh on the nose, with aromas intrinsic to the variety: tropical, reminiscent of mango, passion fruit and pineapple. The 4/5 months of aging in new French oak barrels gives it structure; the presence of pineapple, good acidity and a balanced and persistent finish.
